Ladies is it normal to have an "Escape Fund?"

  • A woman revealed on Mumsnet that a friend was secretly putting away money for what she called her “runaway fund” in case she needed to run away or leave home for any reason
  • The woman was “horrified” and asked others how they’d feel if they found out their S.O. was doing that
  • Some said they’d be “gutted,” but others thought it was a good idea

Even the happiest of marriages can fall apart at some point, but would you be willing to make sure you have some insurance in case that happens? That was the question posed by a woman on the Internet forum Mumsnet, and folks had some distinct opinions.

It all started when a woman revealed that a friend told her she was secretly putting away up to $280 a month for what she called her “runaway fund” just in case she needed to run away or leave home for any reason. The woman insisted she was perfectly happy in her marriage but said it was something every women should have just in case.

The poster was “horrified” at her friend’s admission, and asked other users whether they had ever heard of such a fund, or had one themselves. The answers were mixed.

One person admitted she’d be “gutted” if she found out her husband had such a fund, and suspected he would feel the same if he discovered she had one. Others didn’t think it was actually that bad of an idea.

“I'd love to be able to afford to have one. I feel very vulnerable. If you can afford it, you should try and have something put by,” wrote one user, while another added, “It's not a new idea and it's not a bad one either.”
