Katy Perry is speaking about the recent trip she took to Madagascar as her first visit to the country on behalf of UNICEF.
In a statement, she says that her "eyes were opened wide" by witnessing the lack of basic health and education necessities available to the people of the African island, which is one of the poorest countries in the world.
Katy visited several parts of Madagascar, "from crowded city slums to the most remote villages," participating in activities with children. The pop star also went to a nutrition center, where she learned about the high rates of malnutrition in the country.
Meanwhile, Perry has been added to the line-up for the upcoming ASCAP "I Create Music" Expo. Katy, who is coming off her recent split with John Mayer, is joining artists like Ne-Yo, Lionel Richie, Diplo and Big Sean for the ASCAP Expo.
